Healing, Suffering, and Theology

Let’s talk about the theology of healing for a second. I just read a story of a lady with type one diabetes sitting in church and being told she wasn’t healed because of her lack of faith. As I have wrestled with the theology of healing in conjunction with the theology of suffering, I have learned that God’s ways are so much higher than my ways and that God’s thoughts higher than my thoughts. And get this: Physical illness is not the greatest evil.

One common thing among Jesus’s miracles: He healed pretty indescrimantently: there is not much in common with the different healings by Jesus and His disciples. Many well-meaning individuals like to blame our continued sickness on our lack of faith. Often, this is because they like to feel in control: “it can’t happen to me because I have this or that.”

Here’s my current conclusion about God and illness:

God is bigger than my biggest thoughts, and His ways are greater than my ways. And so it is safe to trust Him with my healing and with my suffering.

John 9: 1-3: “As He passed by He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or His parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

My ultimate prayer: Lord, heal me: Body, mind, and spirit. And in the process, may you, Lord, be glorified in my sickness and in my healing, and may I suffer and thrive in such a way that always points others directly to You.

  1. Amen! This was a life giving verse to me as I struggled (still do) with the same questions. I understand that I cannot fully understand God’s thoughts and ways but I find peace that He has a plan and a purpose for His glory in my life. I also do not want a god I can understand. Then He’s not big enough to deal with all that is messed up in the world… Always appreciate your sharing!
